The first day of the hybrid in-person and digital People’s Summit for Climate Justice kicked off yesterday with over 12,000 registrations and nearly all sessions fully booked. Highlights included ‘A Global Green New Deal and how to win it’ in Adelaide Place with Caroline Lucas MP (UK).

‘The People vs the UNFCCC’, in the Glasgow Film Theatre put the COP process on trial. Panelists included Amb. Lumumba Di-Aping, former Chief Negotiator for G77 and China countries, and Pablo Solon, former Chief Negotiator for Bolivia. Over 40 kids came along to the family sessions, and theatre of the oppressed performance ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ by Glasgow migrant justice group MORE was met with standing ovations.

Today, highlights include a celebration of the legendary Australian Jack Mundey and the Green Bans, hear from coastal Indigenous peoples fighting the British Crown to regain control over their lands in unceded British Columbian territory in ‘Defending Old Growth Forests: Indigenous Rights & Land Title’ and an international panel with trade unionists fighting for a just transition in ‘Working class struggles against climate change: union stories from the frontline’.

People’s Summit Programme Coordinator Jana Ahlers said: “It’s amazing to see so many people registering for the People’s Summit, and so many sessions sold out. We wanted to create an alternative, inspiring space away from the UN Climate negotiations which flips the colonial script, putting those most often silenced to the front. The huge popularity of the first day of the People’s Summit shows that people need this.”
