The world has no more time to delay the phase-out of fossil fuels.

As world leaders gather for the UN’s annual climate negotiations at COP29, thousands upon thousands of people will take to the streets worldwide for a Global Day of Action to demand climate justice.

Across Great Britain, our movement will unite to demand the government ends our reliance on fossil fuels, pays up for climate finance – and ends its complicity in Israel’s escalating genocidal violence. Without human rights, there can be no climate justice.

End fossil fuels.

Record heat in our atmosphere and oceans is driving climate disasters around the world, with those who’ve done least to cause this crisis suffering most. If we’re to have any hope of a liveable planet, we must end our reliance on fossil fuels – fast, fair and forever.

This is incompatible with plans in the UK and other rich global North countries to expand oil and gas extraction. Just one project, the planned Rosebank oil and gas field in the North Sea, would produce carbon emissions greater than that of 700 million people in the world’s poorest countries in a year if allowed to go ahead.

With the new Labour government committing to end new oil and gas licensing – pausing approval for new projects while they consult on their approach – we need to take this opportunity to push for the decisive shift we need.

Prime Minister Starmer must call time on all new drilling, phase out existing fossil fuel projects that are pushing us beyond climate limits and invest in a rapid, equitable and just transition.

Pay up for climate breakdown.

Global North governments, elites, and corporations owe the global South a huge climate debt. With responsibility for over 75% of global accumulated emissions – and only 25% of the world’s population – they’ve far exceeded their fair share of the earth’s carrying capacity and are primarily responsible for the climate crisis.

Global North governments must pay US$5 trillion yearly in climate finance, as a downpayment for the debt that is owed —  and that must start now.

There is money available, and more money can be raised. The UK government should shift public finance away from dirty fossil fuels into renewable energy accessible to all. They should end public subsidies for fossil fuels and false solutions. Tax systems should be reformed, so polluters and profiteers pay their dues – and we can pay up our fair share in climate finance.

End the genocide.

The climate crisis and genocide in Gaza are inextricably linked and we must put a stop to both.

Over the last year, we’ve witnessed Israel’s campaign displace millions of Palestinians and the death toll has reached upwards of 41,500. Every semblance of decency and humanity has been violated with absolute impunity, despite well-documented war crimes, crimes against humanity and a plausible case of genocide.

The complicity of global North governments in Israel’s crimes illustrates the reality already being faced by many of our communities on the frontlines of climate violence in the global South. Peoples and territory are sacrificed to protect the interests of powerful elites and big business.

There can be no climate justice without human rights and the cessation of global conflict. The UK government must immediately end arms trade and all complicity in Israel’s genocidal violence.
Our demand for climate justice is a demand for peace, human rights and a liveable future for all.
