Activists from XR Vaal and Botle Ba Tlhaho Environmental Group want a just transition to renewable energy, and so they targeted state energy company Eskom, which uses coal to generate 90% of the nation’s electricity. On November 3rd, a dozen rebels assembled outside Kwaggastroom train station to sing, wave banners, and demand that Eskom go renewable, or go to hell! Eskom is just one of many companies driving extraction in the Vaal triangle (an industrial area rich in natural resources). Acid mine drainage, air smog, and deforestation have been rife for decades.
