Defending Old Growth Forests: Indigenous Rights & Land Tite
Hear from coastal Indigenous peoples fighting the British Crown to regain control over their lands in unceded British Columbia alongside leading First Nations Rights & Title lawyers and Climate Justice allies speaking up for ancient ecosystems that support the last wild salmon and biodiversity hot spots in western Canada. Canadian and British Columbian governments continue to violate the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous people through Tar Sands pipelines, fracked gas fossil fuel expansion projects as well as continued old growth ecosystem destruction. We will center our presentation on the current globally precedent-setting Nuchatlaht Nation vs. British Columbia court case to illuminate the hypocrisy of the Trudeau and Horgan governments.
Contributors: Jordan Micheal (Tyee Haa'wilth of Nuchatlaht Nation), Tla'litalas (karissa) Glendale (Kwakwaka'wakw & Haida First Nation), Anjali Appadurai (Climate Justice Campaigner, Sierra Club BC), Jack Woodward (Rights & Title lawyer at the Woodward Law Firm), Mark Worthing (Coastal Projects Lead, Sierra Club BC), 1-2 potential additional speakers, pending.
